More News of Baobab:

NADMO comes to our help

After our fire disaster on a Saturday in March Mr Mensah, the Regional Coordinator of NADMO Elmina, immediately came to see and investigate about what happened and he sent his report to Accra. Since then nothing happened. When I had the opportunity to invite him for our Public Forum at Kissi about Bushfire, I complained that until now we have not heard from them again. So very much to our surprise, the next day a Pick Up came to the Center full of items for the Baobab School: 15 big washing bowls, 10 buckets and 5 big bags of maize. Mr Mensah apologized for the delay but also said that they are dependant on Accra and this is what they can give us so far- it was not much, compared to the dimension of the disaster, but it was a gesture and made us very happy.

Fire disaster at Baobab Center
Fire destroys 5 buildings of Baobab

Caused by an uncontrolled bushfire, probably put by hunters to catch some grass cutters, 5 of the most beautiful buildings of the Baobab Center burnt down last Saturday, when only 4 people were at the Center  to help. It took the fire service of Komenda (6 km) more than one hour to arrive at the Center. One car from Cape Coast and one car from Elmina arrived at the same time. But it was too late: everything inside the houses burnt to ashes including all our Culture equipment: 30 drums, costumes for the different dances, t-shirts, bells, everything.

2 beautiful round houses with each 3 rooms with office equipment, machines, 3 fully equipped volunteer’s rooms, burnt totally down

It did not rain since December and everything was absolutely dry. Bushfire caused by hunters have been worrying us since we have started building up the Youth Training Center. Rains of ashes were our nightmare and this time it happened.

We want to continue, nothing can stop us- but we need financial help. Manpower will be provided, but the wood to reroof and building materials to rebuild what our children need to be educated.

The rainy season will start soon and then we are in trouble: the dining hall was used as class room, the children have nowhere to eat, the cooks can’t prepare the food and the Kente weavers can’t work.
